ATS-Friendly Resumes: How to Get Past the Robots in 2026
An applicant tracking system (ATS) parses your CV into structured data before any human sees it. If the parser can't read a section, that experience effectively doesn't exist. The good news: ATS-friendly formatting is simple and it also happens to be what humans prefer.
What “ATS-friendly” actually means
Real, selectable text in a single column with standard section headings and chronological dates. That's 90% of it. The parser reads top to bottom, so sidebars, text boxes, tables-as-layout, icons-as-information and photos with embedded text all risk scrambling the order or dropping content.
Single-column templates like Stockholm, Ledger, Nordwick and Beacon are the safest choice. Two-column layouts can work if the reading order is linear — Cascade and Atlas keep a calm linear flow — but when in doubt, go single-column.
7 mistakes that get resumes auto-rejected
Headers and footers for contact details (many parsers skip them), fancy job titles nobody searches for, skills hidden inside images or charts, inconsistent date formats, acronyms without the full term at least once, keyword-stuffing in white text (a red flag), and exporting as an image-only PDF or photo of a CV.
A 2-minute ATS self-check
Select-all and copy your CV text into a plain text file. If it reads in the right order — name, contact, experience with dates, education, skills — parsers will handle it. If chunks are missing or scrambled, switch to a simpler template.
Then mirror 3–5 exact phrases from the job ad (same spelling: “customer service”, not “client support”) in your experience bullets and skills. Relevance matching starts with vocabulary.
Quick answers
Which template is best for ATS?
Single-column, real text, standard headings. Stockholm and Ledger were designed for exactly this; Nordwick and Beacon parse cleanly too.
Is PDF okay for ATS?
Yes if it renders as real text over the page — which is how this builder exports. Image-only PDFs and scanned documents are the problem, not PDFs as such.
